Compass Box Three Year Deluxe Scotch Hard to find in stock!

Composed of less than 1% three year-old malt whisky produced near the village of Brora, 90% malt whisky of an unstated age from the same distillery and around 9% peaty malt whisky distilled on the Isle of Skye, regulations only permit us only to share details of the age of youngest component! No matter. For it is this three year-old that is most important to us. Aged from new-make spirit in our own first-fill American oak casks, it imparts a lively vivacity and represents a milestone in our development as whisky makers. Limited edition 3282 bottles produced.

A typically cheeky whisky from Compass Box, proudly proclaiming its age statement of three years old, when only a tiny amount of the whisky in the bottle is that young. The other 99% is a carefully selected combination of whiskies from "the village of Brora" and "distilled on the Isle of Skye". The result is a luxurious blended malt with carefully balanced smoke.

This Limited bottling is a direct reaction a political commentary, even to the recent issues that Compass Box has faced with transparency and EU and UK labeling laws. In short, they’ve been told they can’t reveal the ages of the various components in their blends, except for the youngest one. For example, if they were to put a teaspoon of five year-old Glenlivet into a vat containing 30 year-old Clynelish and bottle it, they cannot say the phrase “30 years old” in any public context, even buried on their website. They are allowed to say “5 years old”, or no age at all. As many of you are aware, the result of this law is the growing proliferation of “NAS” or “No Age Statement” whiskies.

The 3 Year Old Deluxe is a thumbed nose at UK regulations because it contains (unspecified ages of) older whiskies with 0.4% of 3 year-old Clynelish. Remember that three years is the minimum allowed age for scotch whisky, so celebrating “3 years old” in large, obnoxious font on the bottle label and marketing materials is the corporate labeling equivalent of peacefully picketing the UK parliament building with signs and chanting “Hey No, We Won’t Go!” In order to adhere to the letter of the law, Compass Box cannot publicly reveal the ages of the older components in this (or any other) blend, but they can tell you privately if you send them an email.

The 3 Year Old Deluxe is a new limited edition that formed part of artisan whisky company Compass Box's Autumn releases. It is a blended malt formed of just three components, one of which is just three years old. This makes up just 0.4% of the whisky but legally has to be named - the youngest whisky included must be shown if declaring an age statement.  The whisky is released to support Compass Box's Scotch Whisky Transparency campaign. This was launched after Compass Box were informed that they were communicating information about the components within their whiskies in an illegal way.

Compass Box was founded in 2000 by John Glaser and they have premises in both London and Edinburgh. They also have an imaginative ethos to buy whisky from a small number of distilleries and craft them together into a unique product. All products are produced and released in small batches and given creative names.  They have won numerous awards for both their whiskies and creative packaging and label designs.

The three year old component included within the final whisky has been fully aged by Compass Box themselves in first fill American oak casks.  This new make spirit came from a north Highland distillery and has been blended with older whisky from the same distillery (this forms 90% of the blended malt) and peated malt of an unspecified age from an island distillery (9.6%).
"3 Year Old Deluxe is a celebration of the role that whiskies of all ages can play in a well-constructed blend. We like to say that it is ... precociously mature. " John Glaser - Founder of Compass Box.

The 3 Year Old Deluxe is bottled at 49.2% ABV and is non chill-filtered and of natural colour. There are only 3,282 bottles.
