Elijah Craig 18-Year-Old Single Barrel Bourbon, the oldest Single Barrel Bourbon available in the world, is bottled solely from one barrel hand-selected by Master Distillers Parker and Craig Beam, not from the mingling of many barrels, which is the practice for standard and Small Batch Bourbons.

The brand carries the name of Rev. Elijah Craig, the man who discovered the method of making true Kentucky Bourbon when he stored his wares in barrels that had been charred in a fire.

Elijah Craig Single Barrel is a critically acclaimed Bourbon, having captured the 2010 “Best Bourbon” and “Double Gold Medal” at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, “Gold Medal” at the WSWA Spirits Tasting Competition, and was named in the “Top 50 Spirits of 2010” by Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

The packaging reflects the hand-crafted care that goes into the making of the Bourbon. The elegant oval decanter-style bottle features a cork stopper covered in marble-look closure, an impression of the initials “EC” in a pewter-colored seal and an intricate stylized corn filigree.

Elijah Craig 18-Year-Old Single Barrel Bourbon is available in 750 ml bottles and bottled at 45 percent alcohol by volume (90 proof).

In approximately 1789, Craig founded a distillery. About a century later, the Rev. Craig was dubiously claimed to have been the inventor of Bourbon whiskey by being the first to age the distillation in charred oak casks, "a process that gives the bourbon its reddish color and unique taste." The Heaven Hill company uses this claim in its advertising of their product.

Bourbon whiskey derives its name from the general area originally established as Bourbon County, which was originally established as the name of a county in Virginia, in honor of the French royal House of Bourbon family. The naming was a gesture of gratitude, as France had assisted the colonial rebellion in the U.S. revolutionary war against England. However, although the borders and naming of the counties in the area shifted over time, Rev. Craig's distillery site has never actually been in a county named Bourbon County. When founded, the distillery was in the nearby territory of the original Fayette County of Virginia, which had been named in honor of the noted Revolutionary War Gen. Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette who was a member of the House of Bourbon. Later government actions would name the area as Woodford County in 1788, and then as Scott County in 1792. The area became part of Kentucky when the state was created from part of Virginia in 1792.

According to local lore, the Rev. Craig suffered a fire in the 1780s that fried his whisky barrels, and was too cheap to get new casks. That made him the first in the country to age corn-based whisky in charred oak casks, and it turned out to be the right call – the casks gave the drink the golden brown color it has today, as well as the undercurrent of smoke, caramel, and vanilla flavors that many taste in bourbon.
